Jeff and Kelly Halldorson have a unique view on how to educate their children, it’s called Unschooling. According to Wiki:
Unschooling is a controversial[1] range of educational philosophies and practices centered on allowing children to learn through their natural life experiences, including play, game play, household responsibilities, work experience, and social interaction, rather than through a more traditional school curriculum. Unschooling encourages exploration of activities, often initiated by the children themselves, facilitated by the adults.
I first time I heard of unschooling I was on the road with Motorhome Diaries in 09′Â but we had to remove that video – due to the state’s aggression on those featured. Since then I’ve been more and more curious about its method and have met several children raised by this method.
It’s sad that most who unschool are unable to share their story due to the states, forced, regulation on education. Often times enforcing laws that basically state the parents, and/or child, have no say in the education (or daily activities) of their children. Jeff and Kelly seem to counter that by being public figures for unschoolers across the country. They’ve gutted an old school bus into their own Unschooling bus and project – see their site here.
I recently had the pleasure to board their bus and ask them a few questions about their (awesome) lifestyle. Watch the video below and let us know what you think about unschooling? For those who are against unschooling as a form of education, are you willing to use the force of the state to put Jeff and Kelly’s kids (or mine in the future) into public schools at your expense – ie, tax dollars?

As a boy I went to private and public school. I hated both and neither classroom system worked that well. It was about friendship, rivalry and society among the kids and obeying rules, schedules and teachers way more than about learning information or skills. It’s better for the teacher and other resources to surround and be utilized by the student on her/his terms than students to be confined, employed, led, limited and punished. Refer to the Montessori education method and Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

Thanks for all.
