For some time now local activists in Keene, NH have been doing ‘Don’t Take the Plea Deal’ outreach. Monday through Thursday (between 8 – 9 am) you can find one or two activists inside Keene District court handing out don’t take the plea deal fliers. This form of activism doesn’t get the same attention as the civil disobedience does but is just as important. Overtime those who are stuck in the system, due to its high demands and financial needs, will start to fight back against the victimless crimes they’re accused of.
The principle is simple, if you’re charged with a victimless offense, often just a fine, take it to trial. The ‘state’ of New Hampshire can not be a victim, victims are real people who’ve caused bodily harm to another or ones property. Clog the system by forcing them to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that you’ve harmed someone. Not only will the state lose some of these cases but it would be a huge financial burden for them. At some point the state would have to decide to either raise taxes or stop arresting people for victimless crimes.
What do you think of this form of activism?
Thanks to all those who conduct this easy and great activism in Keene.
