Fellow Traveller Harassed by Savannah Police (Update)

From my current traveling partner, Nicole Webb, I received this report regarding her brother’s interaction with Savannah police.

Just hours ago, wearily traveling in a new city, out of cash and hungry, my brother Edward and a friend stopped to ask for food and/or work to get by while in Savannah, GA. When asked to leave the shopping center they were resting at, they stopped to buy food at a Subway before vacating the premises. Edward remained outside with his puppy while his female friend bought food but before they could leave, police entered the scene to harass them for earlier panhandling. Edward’s female friend was not harassed since when the police arrived she was not sitting outside on the sidewalk, which in some cities can be construed a crime itself. Edward was arrested for disorderly conduct and for panhandling, one “crime” used as a police officers catchall, the other a petty, victimless crime harming no one, neither of which warrant indefinite caging.

Edward is being held on $2400 bail. As of the last call to the department, he is still in booking at the jailhouse located at 1050 Carl Griffin Dr in Savannah, GA. The phone number for booking is (912) 651-3700. Support and calls for Edward Anauo (likely misspelled Anavo in the system) is greatly appreciated.

Traveling is a risky business due to the various laws built to discourage the free movement of people, even when peacefully trying to exist amongst each other. When pausing to eat is the first step in the process of ending up in jail, society has come to a sad state of discourteousness. Nicole and I will be in Savannah shortly to work as part of The Last Biscuit (temporarily open from 15th to 22nd of this month, over St. Patty’s Day), and will be able to do more for him from there, but any assistance you can lend would be appreciated.

Update:

Edward was released this morning, instead of being held until his hearing. His hearing is this monday.

I know that address all to well :(
    That poor boy :(
Nicole my heart is with your brother and trust me his narrow little white booty is not going to be happy in a 90% black jail. Ya’ll work as fast as you can to get him out and hope that he will be released with a ticket due to overcrowding in the morning after kangaroo court.
It is common occurance for them to let you out the first couple of times you go down with an IOU for some ridiculously high amount (ticket).Cross your fingers and let me know if there is anything I can do
BIG HUGZ to you and yours in these trying times when humans are caged like animals to pay those we hate to rule us longer :(

Thanks Momma Ally! Someone called and said the bail is $240 in person, not $2400, which is a relief, but I don’t condone paying the state to harass oneself. So, hopefully you are right and he is out quickly without anyone fronting the cash.

The puppy is safe with Edwards female companion. She is being helped to the best of our abilities. Many thanks to yall for spreading the word via facebook and sending in calls to the jail.

If anyone has a place indoors for the girl and the puppy to stay it would be much appreciated. It’s getting cold out there in Savannah!

The calls have helped immensely. Instead of awaiting a hearing on Monday, Edward was released this morning and paid no money to the state. Thank you all for your calls and support!

“Traveling is a risky business due to the various laws built to discourage the free movement of people” – well put. Great to see how this turned-out. Sorry I wasn’t able to do more myself.

Did they drop the charges against Edward?
